The Global MilSatCom 2011 conference, with speakers from Europe, South Africa, USA, UAE, Canada and the South American region specializing in military satellite communications, will be held in London, UK from November 29th - December 1st.

The European Space Agency (ESA) conference on Earth Observation for Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions Science will be held in Rome, Italy from November 29th - December 2nd.

The 17th Annual Aerospace & Defence Finance Conference, with forecasts, business development plans and strategies from 30 of the industry’s top CEOs, will be held in New York, NY from November 30th - December 1st.

As the advocates and industry workers take in the last warm rays of the fading summer sun, it's worth noting that only a few conferences are scheduled for the upcoming week. These are:

Science Communications 2011, focused on re-awakening "some of the art in the presentation of science" is being held at the Banff Centre, AB from August 13th - 28th. The program is designed for people working in science and engineering, science communications, journalism, knowledge transfer, science outreach, science policy, and cultural industries to help them better communicate. The program chair is Canadian television personality Jay Ingram.

The ReSpace/MAPLD 2011 Conference will be held Albuquerque, NM from August 23rd - 25th. The joint conference explores recent advances in reconfigurable electronics and microsystems from two perspectives: ReSpace explores the most effective manner in which these electronics revolutionize increasingly capable, compact and low cost spacecraft, while MAPLD explores how to ensure that these reconfigurable electronics survive and perform properly in the extreme conditions of space.

The Space Foundation's local Festival of Science will be held in Colorado Springs, CO on August 25th. Targeted at the middle-school-level, this festival brings students and their families, teachers and community members together with local science-oriented organizations offering hands-on activities to learn about science and technology.

SpaceUP DC will be held in Washington, DC from August 27th - 28th. This is a self described as being "improvised, loose, massively parallel—it’s a happening. If you’re not overwhelmed by the rush of ideas then you’re not paying attention." Anyone looking to learn more is advised to check out the video below.

Two Million People Looking to Network

Space conferences in the 1950's.

Almost 1.7 million students receive their first degree (generally equivalent to a bachelor’s degree) in space related engineering, science or technology fields worldwide each year, according to the 2011 Space Report.

Most of them will eventually go looking for jobs and end up connecting with many of the approximately 14,000 government and private organizations also listed in the Space Report as being part of the international space systems industry.

This industry generated $276.52 Billion USD last year and employs over 300,000 people throughout the world who need to connect with these students because there are quite a few new jobs being created, which need to be filled.

After all, the space systems industry is growing.

As well, this industry is notoriously collaborative with narrow ranges of skills distributed widely across political boundaries. People involved essentially need to connect with others to fill in knowledge gaps, compare notes, exchange ideas, develop contacts and present findings for peer review or else nothing will ever move forward.

So most of this group of two million will end up going to one or more of the 300+ yearly conferences that have grown up over the last 20 years to cater to the people and organizations involved in this industry.

Which is where this blog comes in. Space Conference News will focus on the conferences, activities and events that the people involved in this sector attend to network, learn, develop contacts and exchange ideas.

The editorial focus will be on providing an overview for the “educated, informed but not necessarily specialist” reader who works in the space sector and wishes to track industry activities.

We will do this by “intelligently aggregating” content and information from a variety of sources and then “filling in the blanks” with shorter, background sidebars which insure that the reader does not get lost in dense, jargon filled, journal type articles.

And we'll start by providing a weekly listing of upcoming and recently concluded space focused conferences and events in an easy to digest package suitable for industry, conference organizers and the “educated, informed but not necessarily specialist” reader we hope to cultivate.
